No Need To Worry Over Tax Returns Says Graham Paul & Co

Cardiff based accountants Graham Paul & Co, is reassuring small businesses that there is no need for concern following recent rumours that their tax returns may be examined.

Self employed individuals may have received an “enabling letter” which informs them of a mistake in their 2003 tax return, but without a copy or explanation of the mistake.

A Revenue spokesman allegedly said that the letters were designed to help tax payers fill in returns correctly by avoiding any possible mistakes made in the previous year.

The Revenue decided to issue the letter despite opposition from business organisations and advisers, although it is understood some local tax offices have sent out apologies.

The letter informs companies the Revenue has identified an aspect of the self-employment pages of their tax return, which may need particular attention and that mistakes should be corrected to avoid the need for an enquiry.

John Squire, partner at Graham Paul, comments: “Many people may have been led to believe they were about to be charged extra tax or penalties, however this is not the case. The letters have also led to some conflict between companies and their advisers, as the advisers were not made aware of any mistakes by the Revenue.

“If you are at all concerned about any aspect of your tax return please do not hesitate to contact us.”
